CBD vs. THC: What’s the Difference and Why Does It Matter?

What we feed our dogs matters. Food helps inform health—and we’d never want to give our pets something that could hurt them. In fact, we want to feed them foods that make them feel better.

For lots of people, that means looking into products that we, ourselves, would want. But when it comes to the topic of CBD vs. THC for your pet, there’s a lot of misinformation out there. If you’re wondering what the difference is between CBD and THC, you’re not alone. As it turns out, one of them can have a wonderful (and safe!) effect on how your pup feels.

What are CBD and THC?

Let’s start at the beginning. What are CBD and THC and where do they come from? As it turns out, Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two cannabinoids found in cannabis. Cannabis is the plant genus encompassing both hemp and marijuana. CBD and THC generally have an inverse relationship, meaning that a sample with high levels of CBD will have low levels of THC (and vice versa).

While CBD and THC are sisters with the same chemical formula, their atoms are arranged differently. This seemingly small distinction means big things for the way the substances can affect your pet.

How THC affects pets

When you think of the high associated with marijuana, you’re probably thinking about THC. This controlled substance is sometimes sought after by humans for its psychoactive properties. THC can be prescribed to humans in some states and provides most users with feelings of relaxation, fatigue, hunger, and reduced aggression. In a majority of states, however, THC is legal. It is illegal to prescribe THC for a pet, as dogs are highly sensitive to it.

Dogs that consume THC may feel extreme paranoia, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. A lot of these adverse effects are the result of a dog’s size. A dose of THC will affect a 150-pound much less than it would affect a 15-, 50-, or 100-pound dog. While more research needs to be done on how THC affects dogs, it’s a very bad idea to give your pet THC.

How CBD affects pets

CBD, on the other hand, can never cause a high—no matter how much is consumed. It is fully legal in the United States (unless derived from marijuana, as opposed to hemp). CBD is actually known to reduce the effects of THC and is often paired with THC to reduce anxiety and inflammation.

But CBD can also be separated from THC so that you (or your pet) experience none of the potentially negative effects of THC. In such cases, CBD helps relieve nausea, reduce inflammation, and decrease anxiety. Furthermore, CBD works this way on lots of animals—not just humans. This means that your pet can experience the health-promoting benefits of CBD without being subject to a potentially dangerous THC high.

Understanding the CBD vs. THC debate can protect your pet in more ways than one. For achy or anxious pups, CBD is a safe and legal happy-boosting tool. If you’re interested in relieving your pet’s pain or stress, consider a CBD-infused treat for a happier pup.
