We had the opportunity to speak with Chloe from Wags & Walks. You can read our rescue spotlight on them below!

 

What is the mission of your rescue?

Wags and Walks is different from many other rescues because we do not select dogs based on their size, age, or breed. We hand-pick our dogs based on their temperament and are committed to placing them in homes that are just right for them. Similarly, we do not select our adopters based on how many hours they work or whether they live on a multi-acre property over a condo. We know that, like amazing dogs, loving families come in all shapes and sizes. Our goal is to find an adopter whose home, family and lifestyle are a perfect fit for a particular dog.

As a community of dog lovers our mission is to promote shelter dogs as the best dogs in the world. Wags & Walks’ main goal when founded was to break the stigma that rescue dogs are damaged goods and to help decrease the number of dogs euthanized in local shelters by showing the community that you can find wonderful dogs of all breeds and sizes through rescue. That value has remained consistent as the rescue has continued to grow.

 

What is your rescue’s biggest success story?

Found as a stray and brought to the high-kill Baldwin Park Shelter, Humphrey the 5-year-old English Bulldog, had been through the ringer. He laid in a cold, concrete kennel with skin that was shredded with punctures and lacerations. His head, neck and arms were covered in deep open sores, his eyes were swollen with infected corneal ulcers, and refused to walk. And yet, this 50 pound marshmallow had love for everyone he met. Humphrey wanted to snuggle and be close to everyone that passed by his kennel. The shelter staff went out of their way to alleviate his suffering as best they could until a rescue group could take over…and take over we did. Wags & Walks scooped up this teddy bear and promised him he would never suffer again.

With Humphrey on the way to the adoption center, our loving volunteers and staff waited anxiously for his arrival with warm towels, cozy beds and open arms before he went off to see one of our veterinary partners.  Despite his circumstance, his little nub tail constantly wagged at the sight of a human and when the staff would pet him and stop, he would tap them for more!

He received x-rays, antibiotics for his skin and eyes as well as pain medication. Within days, this little fighter was healing beautifully. We were hoping Humphrey could be socialized with dogs and lo and behold he had become best friends with his foster-brother Jax.

With a little time, patience and kindness we saw Humphrey come out of his shell and learn how to be a new dog! He fell in love with Kongs and tennis balls, learned the joy of a bully stick, and made zoomies in the living room with his foster-brother. It was incredible to see a dog who never knew love, bask in all of the attention from dogs and humans alike! Humphrey was cared for in his foster home while he received treatment and as soon as he was well enough, he headed off to his forever home.

 

What is your rescue’s goal for the future?

With the opening of our very own Wags and Walks Adoption Center in West LA, we hope to double the amount of dogs we’re able to save annually. Our new facility is a bright, healthy and calm environment where the community is welcomed to learn more about the benefits of pet adoption and where we showcase our dogs in the best light – both literally and figuratively. In addition to saving more dogs, we hope to increase community involvement in rescue through adoption, volunteer work and education.
